May 18th at 7:30 PM, a film presentation at the Latvian Centre.

“The Execution Show” – A historical documentary.

It is winter of 1946.  World War II is over.  In Nuremberg the proceedings have started and the Nazi elite are being tried by the allies.

Meanwhile, in the city of Riga, the Soviets are organizing a huge public trial of their own, for seven Nazi criminals.

For three centuries, Riga has not witnessed a public execution.  Yet, the medieval theatre of public punishment and retribution is about to be reborn.

What unites medieval punishment spectacles, fascist and communist violence and the acts of American soldiers in a contemporary Iraqi prison?  The fact that  evil usually has a much more human face than we think.
