ABOUT UMURKUMURS
Located in the Centre's basement, Club Umurkumurs (or "Kumurs" as the regulars call it) provides a cozy atmosphere in which to relax, shoot a game of pool, play a game of darts, or just sit and have a beer with friends. Come in and watch the game on our 62" screen. With hundreds of channels on our satellite TV, a game is always bound to be going on somewhere. With our unique two-room layout, you can choose whether to watch the show in the slightly louder west wing or take it easy in the calmer east wing, the site of many non-formal business meetings.
Along with our comfortable, non-hectic surroundings (including a wonderful mural in the west room by local artist L. Rubenis), we are also one of the few bars in Canada to offer Aldaris beer, imported straight from Latvia. We also have Saku imported from Estonia. Definitely a change from the standard imports you'll find in the beer store, and much better than most I might add - Available here at Umurkumurs.
Friday nights around here are known for our all-you-can-eat buffet dinners, prepared upstairs by the Latvian Centre's Catering Division "The Birches". An eclectic mix of foods means there is always something for everybody - and at only $12.00 a plate (children $7.00) you can't go wrong. Get here early for the best selection. The Dinner Buffet is available between 5:30 and 8:00 pm. A wonderful Saturday morning brunch is also served from 11:30 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Please note that there are no buffet meals provided during March break (usually for two weeks). Call ahead at 416-759-3090 or 416-759-4900.

AND JUST IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING WHAT "UMURKUMURS" MEANS...
There are two stories or definitions. The bar's name itself stems from a long gone market just outside of the Latvian capital of Riga. The Umurkumurs market was a place not unlike today's flea markets or country markets, where merchants from all around would come to a central location on the weekend to sell their wares. It was THE meeting place in the region, and as the Latvian Centre is THE meeting place for Latvians in the Toronto area the bar was named after the market.
The second story is a lot different, and whether or not it has anything to due with the market mentioned above we don't know. An Umurkumurs, we've been told, was also a large telephone pole-type structure, which had a parcel of goods lying on its top. The pole would then be greased-up and local men would attempt to climb the pole in order to claim the prize awaiting them above. As of yet there are no plans to put in such a pole at the Centre, and we do not encourage anyone to attempt climbing existing poles to receive prizes, as there most likely are none.
